Canon EOS Rebel T3 (EOS 1100D) Digital SLR Review
Canon EOS Rebel T3 (or EOS 1100D in Europe) is an entry level dSLR that combines quality and affordability. This camera is ideal for digital photography beginners, as it has all you need to start taking great photos.
Canon EOS Rebel T3 (EOS 1100D) is a relatively cheap dSLR that is idea for those who want better quality photos than any compact camera can produce, but are not ready to purchase a more expensive dSLR. Despite being positioned as entry-level, Rebel T3 has features that capture images with great clarity and quality.
Here are the most notable EOS Rebel T3/1100D features at a glance:
- 12.2 MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor
- ISO 100 – 6400
- Improved EOS HD Movie mode with expanded recording and in-camera video editing options
- High speed 9-point AF system
- f/5.6 cross-type center point
- Enhanced metering with a 63-zone, dual-layer metering system
Now let’s have a more in-depth look at the features. First of all, the new CMOS sensor deserves some extra attention. In the product information, Canon states that the camera’s 12.2 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor captures photos with great clarity and tonal range because it uses a lot of the same technologies that are present in professional cameras, such as EOS-1D Mark III. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Well, but why then is this sensor offers one of the lowest resolutions available in Canon cameras (check out the table in this article to compare different sensors)? Unfortunately, there is no answer to this question. However, this doesn’t mean that the quality of the images taken with Rebel T3 is low. On the contrary – the camera offers amazing clarity on high ISO settings. According to Canon, this is because the camera has high light gathering capacity for each pixel.
EOS Rebel T3/1100D has the DIGIC 4 Image Processor that makes the camera super fast. As there is nothing more annoying than a slow camera (take some Nikon Coolpix models as an example), this feature is very important. Basically, DIGIC 4 ensures that pictures are taken, processed, and saved really quickly. This is especially handy when you are shooting in RAW, use creative filters and resize your pics using the camera. It’s also really important for shooting Full HD video.
One of the really great features of this camera is the range of its ISO settings. It’s 100 – 6400. While you may think that 6400 will never work, you are pretty much wrong. Rebel T3 does an amazing job shooting clean images at high ISO settings. Check out the pictures here to compare it with Nikon D3100. The camera also works stunningly in full daylight and provides radiant, crisp images.
Another important feature of this camera is its highly accurate metering. EOS Rebel T3/1100D has a dual-layer sensor with 63 metering zones. Unlike a lot of other digital cameras, this dSLR measures not only the amount of light, but also luminosity and color. Because of this exposure and focusing errors are minimized and the quality of the images is improved. Even if the light changes frequently, Rebel T3 will provide stable exposure.
One more feature I have to mention is Canon’s 9-point AF system. Even though it only uses 9 points and not 11 like Nikon. The results are very good. The secret of Auto-focus high accuracy is the f/5.6 cross-type center point. The camera uses both standard and high-precision focus depending on the circumstances like light and aperture.
Ease of use
Because a lot of beginners will find using a dSLR tricky, Canon came up with a built-in feature that helps beginners master digital photography quicker – Feature Guide. This guide displays easy to follow instructions on the camera display, making it easy to start taking great photos. In addition to that, there are Quick Control screen function for easy operation.
Canon EOS Rebel T3/1100D is an ideal first time dSLR for those who want to start taking stunning photos. Highly recommended.
